Monsignore Anzino’s greatest contributions to Italy resulted from his role as intermediary between 2 post unification Kings and the Popes in Rome. This role was fraught with political and religious drama as Pope Pius IX had excommunicated King Victor Emanuele II of Italy, (and others), after the King’s army wrested control of the Papal States in central Italy from the Pope in 1871. Some of the articles mentioned at the bottom of this page allude to this conflict and drama.
