| Where the Tomans and Byrnes lived in Northern Ireland
Many Irish lost their jobs to automation in the milling industry in the late 1800’s. This fueled a large emigration wave that the Tomans and Byrnes were a part of. Ellen (Byrne) Toman was born in Lurgan, and Samuel John Toman was born in Ballydougan just a few miles south. Available records suggest that Grandpa Toman knew Ellen Byrnes before he left for the US in 1911. It also appears that while Grandma (Byrne) Toman left her family on friendly terms, (she kept in contact her whole life), Grandpa Toman probably didn’t.
