Where the Tomans and Byrnes lived in Northern Ireland

Many Irish lost their jobs to automation in the milling industry in the late 1800’s. This fueled a large emigration wave that the Tomans and Byrnes were a part of. Ellen (Byrne) Toman was born in Lurgan, and Samuel John Toman was born in Ballydougan just a few miles south. Available records suggest that Grandpa Toman knew Ellen Byrnes before he left for the US in 1911. It also appears that while Grandma (Byrne) Toman left her family on friendly terms, (she kept in contact her whole life), Grandpa Toman probably didn’t.

Where the Tomans and Byrnes left Northern Ireland

Both Samuel John Toman and Ellen Byrne left from the Port of Londonderry on Ireland’s northern coast. Grandpa Toman left Londonderry March 4 1911 on the SS Numidian and arrived in Boston on March 19. Grandma Toman, emigrated 3 years later March 28 1914 and arrived in New York on April 7. Ellen was met in New York by Samuel’s aunt Nellie (O’Hanlon) Choisez, who lived in Jersey City. Samuel John and Ellen married 3 weeks later in Manchester, CT. Samuel and Ellen obviously knew each other in Ireland.

In May of 2014 Tom Marchisa and Jenny took a trip to Ireland. After touring Ireland by car for 2 weeks,Jenny returned to the US. Tom rented a motorcycle in Dublin and took the ferry to the Isle of Man to attend the 2014 Annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle races. When Tom returned to Dublin , he met his 3rd cousin, Gerry Carville from Leeds England, and the two of them spent 2 days traveling in Dublin and Wexford to the south.
In Lurgan, Tom and Jenny visited 2nd cousin Martin Toner, his family, and Martin’s dad Ben. When Tom returned from the Isle of Man, he and 2nd cousin Gerry Carville spent 2 days by car sightseeing in Dublin and County Wexford, where Gerry used to live.
