Places and Dates

Tom’s trip in 2016 combined genealogy with a motorcycle tour through central Italy. Tom flew into Rome on May 24 and drove to Genova to start his genealogy research. Here was Tom’s itinerary:

May 24 – May 26      Genova and Savona

Genova is a port city on the Ligurian Sea that claims Cristoforo Columbus as one of it’s own. Cristoforo Marchisa, (Alessandro Marchisa’s brother), lived here with his family.
Savona is a port city a few kilometers north of Genova.		 genova-map

May 26 – May 29     Torino

Torino is the northern Italian city where Lena (Peracchio) Marchisa was born and lived in until she emigrated to the US in 1907. Torino was also the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, ruled by Vittorio Emanuele II before he became the first king of a unified Italy. Monsignore Valerio Anzino, (Ippolita (Gotta) Marchisa’s first cousin), worked for the king here. torino-map

May 27     Mazze

Mazze is a small town east of Torino. Valerio Anzino is buried in the Mazze Cemetery and Valerio’s sister, Giuseppina, ran a school in Mazze. At some point in the mid 1900s, the Anzino Family burial vault was transferred to another family. mazze-map

May 29 – June 2     Montemagno

Montemagno is a small town about 9 km north of Fubine. Tom stayed at the Tenuta Montemagno, a wine resort, while researching Fubine and Quattordio. The Resort manager’s fiance turned out to be Daniela Marchisa, a third cousin to Tom. montemagno-map

May 29 – June 2     Fubine

Fubine is the small town in the Piedmonte Region in northern Italy that the Marchisa, Saglio, Zola, and Ferraris families came from. It was also the town where Monsignore Valerio Anzino was born in 1832. While in Fubine, Tom met Giuseppina Anzino and Laura Santoro Ragaini. That meeting turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to conduct deep research into Monsignore Valerio Anzino. Both Giuseppina’s and Laura’s ancestors were also ancestors of Valerio. Laura provided photos that had been in her family for over 140 years that shed light on the Monsignore’s life. While in Fubine Tom also visited with Luisa Marchisa , a 5th cousin that Tom had contaced through FaceBook. Tom and Iuri Silvestri also visited with Angelo Balestrero , Fubine’s self appointed historian. When Angelo learned from the mayor of Fubine that there was a Marchisa from the US visiting, he invited us over to his house to share stories and good wine. Angelo lives in a house that has been in his family since 1620. Incredible !

May 29     Camagna

Camagna Monferrato is the small town where I had dinner with Luisa Marchisa , her family, and Iuri Silvestri, the Italian Genealogist who also acted as Tom’s interpreter.Luisa is a 5th cousin of Tom’s who lives in Fubine.

May 27     Quattordio

Quattordio is a small town just south of Fubine. One of Monsignore Valerio Anzino brothers is buried here. Quattordio is also the town that Domenica (Mondo) Lombardi lived in before she emigrated to the US. quattrodio-map

June 2 – June 3 and June 10 – June 14     Roma

Roma genealogy is focused on Monsignore Valerio Anzino and his brother Allesandro. Monsignore Anzino moved to Roma from Firenza when it became the capital city of a unified Italy. Allesandro Anzino was Director at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1885. roma-map

June 3 – June 10     Motorcycle Tour

Tom went on a one week motorcycle tour in central Italy with a small group of other riders. There were 2 guides, 1 American and 1 Italian and 5 other riders. Tom selected a Ducati 899 Monster as his tour bike. The hilight of the tour was attending Ducati Race School at the Misano Racetrack on the Adriatic Coast near the town of Riccione.
