May 31 – June 2     Torino

Tom flew into Milano on May 31 and drove to Torino where he spent 2 nights. He was met there by Iuri Silvestri , an Italian genealogist. Tom and Iuri spent June 1 in the Archivio di Stato Torino, (State/Royal Archives), in Torino conducting Anzino research. There was not a lot of information about Mons Valerio Anzino in the Archives, but we did find documents about his uncle Mons Giuseppe Anzino. Monsignor Giuseppe Anzino was a tutor to the princes of the Savoia, a Chaplain to Kings Carlo Alberto and Vittorio Emmanuel II, and had worked in the Savoia Chapel since at least 1825.

June 2 – June 5     Fubine, Quattordio, Montemagno

Tom spent 3 nights at the Tenuta Montemagno, run by Alberto Ravetti, husband of Tom’s cousin Daniela Marchisa. The days were spent in Fubine and Quattordio. Tom photographed every burial marker in the Fubine Cemetery and has started to enter the indexed photos into a Fubine Records database. Tom and Iuri had dinner with Luisa Marchisa and her family. Luisa is a 5th cousin.Tom and Iuri, the Italian Genealogist, accompanied by Laura Santoro-Ragini, researched the Church records in Fubine and photographed all Marchisa and Anzino records dated from 1580 to the late 1600s. Tom, Iuri, and Laura then drove to Quattordio and researched both Church and Civil records focused on Laura’s ancestors. While researching the church records we discovered the marriage record of Laura’s great great great grandmother. That record confirmed the family connection between Laura and Tom..

June 5 – June 9     Orte, Roma

Tom and Iuri left Fubine on June 5 and headed south to Roma. Iuri had received an email from the State Archives in Roma, (the equivalent of our National Archives in Washington, D.C.), alerting him to the fact that they had discovered many documents either authored by Valerio Anzino or correspondence sent to him. Tom and Iuri made a decision to head to Roma to follow that lead. They stayed at a B and B in Orte, a town north of Roma on the train line. Tom and Iuri spent their time in Roma researching in the State Archives and also visiting Roma’s 2 big cemeteries, Verano and Ostia Antica. Tom was able to photograph hundreds of Anzino related documents and also found Anzino burial markers and headstones in the Verano Cemetery.

June 12     Mazze

On the way from Siena to Milano Tom stopped at the Mazze Cemetery to make another attempt to find the burial vault or burial marker for Mons Valerio Anzino. One of the documents that Tom and Iuri discovered at the State Archives in Roma confirmed that in fact Valerio had been buried in Mazze. While there remain some burial vaults in the Mazze cemetery that likely date back to the mid-late 1800s, none of them were marked with the Anzino name. What likely happened is that the vault at some point in the early to mid 1900s was purchased by another family. Vaults and burial sites in Italy were not purchased in perpetuity as they are in the US.

Tom believes, (more of a hunch than anything else), that the burial vault in the photo to the right was the Anzino vault. There were only 5-6 vaults in the cemetery that looked old enogh to be the original Anzino vault and this one in particular just seemed “right”.
